Last weekend, some of our team traveled down to Montgomery, Alabama for the second annual Southern Makers event. Southern Makers is a one-day experience that celebrates innovation and creativity of all types of makers in Alabama. The day is filled with everything from panel discussions and live music, to cooking demonstrations and workshops. Some of the top talents working in design, architecture, fashion, and food throughout the state are celebrated each year.

Maker booths are organized by region; North, Central, and South Alabama were all represented at this year’s event. Alabama Chanin set up shop next to our several of our neighbors and friends, including artist Audwin McGee, Scout By Two, Billy Reid, Zkano, and Butch Anthony.

It was a pleasure to spend the beautiful, sunny day with fellow makers from all over Alabama. This year, in addition to our pop-up shop, Alabama Chanin hosted a DIY Chair Workshop alongside Butch Anthony, at which participants repurposed a selection of gently used chairs using fabric, paint, stencils, and an assortment of tools.

In the afternoon, Natalie participated in a panel discussion led by the Center for the Study of Southern Culture. Sustainability and craft were recurring topics addressed during the conversation, which was led by filmmaker and SFA member Joe York and included filmmaker Andrew Grace, Garlan Gudger of Southern Accents, Keith Cochran of Wood Studio, Edwin Marty of E.A.T. South, Tyler Jones of 1504 Pictures, and Carole Griffin of Birmingham’s Continental Bakery and Chez Lulu. After the panel, Florence’s own Pine Hill Haints wrapped up the day with a rousing performance on the main stage.

The event was, once again, a great platform at which to celebrate our state and the makers who call Alabama home. Plan your trip for next year.
