Poison & Wine

What an inspiration to get to hear The Civil Wars at Billy Reid’s Florence store this weekend.

One of my best music memories of all time is having seen Kate Bush - in a small venue - in New York City in the late eighties; the performance Saturday night ranks right up there.

Beauty and harmony beyond compare:

Sunday Morning Patty

Nashville Sunday morning and Mother Nature has a grip on the city. The storm moves through - and through again. There are now rivers where once there was nothing. Roads are flooded, families are moved from their homes and we sit here watching the rain and lightening while listening to Patti Griffin: Downtown Church. Feels just like church.

Thanks to Traci, I am headed to the Ryman Auditorium on June 15th to see Patty play. I can hardly breathe. I have not been to the Ryman since the last time the Opry played there  in 1974 - while my grandfather and grandmother Perkins swayed in the pews.

Sunday morning indeed: Patti Griffin: Downtown Church

Nashville Stories

What a wonderful treat it was to be in Nashville last week and I want to share some of the highlights of the trip over the course of this week.

On Thursday, I had the chance to sit down with Elizabeth Cook. She is a woman of many talents which I shared back in July of last year. I don’t have satellite radio, so, I had never actually had the chance to hear Apron Strings that Sirius describes like this:

Elizabeth Cook’s Apron Strings
Thursdays and Fridays 6 am - 10 am ET
A moonshiner’s daughter from the backwoods of Florida, sassy country singer Elizabeth Cook kicks off Thursday and Friday mornings from Music City U.S.A. with a scintillating mix of music, recipes and household cleaning tips. A regular on the Grand Ole Opry, her 2007 album Balls was produced by Rodney Crowell

Luckily, Traci brought a selection of recordings from the show and we all got a chance to hear how absolutely smart, funny and inspiring Elizabeth is as she shares music, tips for life and, of course, tales from the kitchen.

But, little did I know that, aside from singing, she and I share a love of movies, books and shoes!

Yes, that is Elizabeth in one of our dresses at the Grand Ole Opry.

My grandfather Perkins took me to the last Opry at the Ryman Theatre. I can remember how the benches and the floors shook as the performers blasted their love. I am looking forward as Maggie grows to take her to see Elizabeth time and time again as she sings her heart out. Elizabeth Cook: a true Songbird!

Her song Mama’s Prayers is a favorite around our office & our Diane calls it “the prettiest song she has ever heard.” Give it to your Mama as a belated Mother’s Day present.

& thank you to Traci Thomas for opening the doors to Nashville… we will be back over, and over again!

Weekend Music

It was a great weekend for music in the Shoals…

Jason Isabel and the 400 Unit launched their CD – Seven Mile Island - at the newly remodeled Shoals Theatre in downtown Florence. It was staggering to see this iconic venue from my childhood develop to fantastic music venue. The place was packed with friends, family, fans…

Fame Studio, Muscle Shoals Sound, music giants Dick Cooper, Spooner Oldham and others watched as the theatre transformed.

CONGRATULATIONS go out to Spooner Oldham, and his wife Karen, for Spooner’s recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. What a great, and well deserved, honor. All of us in the Shoals are proud to call Spooner friend and hero.

Also, a GIANT shout-out to Shonna Tucker (more amazing than everyone raves) of the Drive-By Truckers for stories, laughter, good food and company… we can’t wait to photograph Shonna for the upcoming Songbirds catalog.

And we are all looking forward to seeing the Truckers @ the Shoals Theatre in the near future..

Thanks to Traci @ Thirty Tigers and Logan @ Lightening Records for making it all happen…

Alabama Studio Music

Thanks to Traci for sending this new playlist of music:

"I've created a playlist of music to stitch by. I kind of kept to the tone of what Natalie was playing during the workshop.
I also choose strong women as the possibilities could have been endless and I needed to narrow it down somehow. You should be able to find all of these on iTunes..."

I made an iMix called Alabama Studio Style - Traci's Mix so that everyone can find it easily:

And here is our Alabama Studio Playlist arranged by Artist:

It Takes Balls

Okay, what about a woman who can sing and cook, has her own radio program called “Apron Strings” and has a song about how it "Takes Balls" to be a woman?

Check out Elizabeth Cook on MySpace.

Elizabeth has fans from all corners of the earth that make their own music videos to her songs. Check out this awesome It Takes Balls video that Elizabeth found on You Tube.

Alabama Song

Our weekend workshop was a beautiful mixture of women from all walks of life. It was wonderful to hear our studio filled with laughter, chatter and, from time to time, the quiet hum of concentrated fingers at work. All of the projects are lovely and I am certain that the participants will be showing off their garments over the course of the next months.

(Keep an eye on the flickr page for new additions: Alabama Stitch Book Group )

Our Sunday morning was enchanted by a serenade of Alabama Song by singer, songwriter and designer Allison Moorer. Allison is an amazing woman and I was inspired by her fearless choice to make our 16-Panel Swing Dress with all-over rose reverse applique.

I cannot wait to see her on stage in the piece and feel grateful to have found a new stitching sister so close to home as Nashville is just a hop, a skip and a jump up the Natchez Trace from Florence.

Visit Allison’s website:

Listen to her music:

And check out all about her new line of clothing 1 Turtledove:

and stay tuned for more on a week in music (thanks to Allison and Traci)…

Hello Love

I can not say enough about the music of The Be Good Tanyas. We listen to this new CD every day at the office. I have never had the opportunity to see them play live but I want them to come to Alabama very soon...
