A NEW CHAPTER.
What began in 2000 with a return to Florence and a belief in the power of craft has grown into Alabama Chanin, The School of Making, and Project Threadways—organizations rooted in community, education, and storytelling. As we approach our 25th anniversary, we’re launching phase one of our capital campaign—a $3.5 million raise—to create a permanent home at 302 East College Street, a space for making, gathering, and preserving the rich history of textiles and fashion. This new headquarters will expand access, deepen our impact, and carry this work forward for generations to come.
The new building will offer:
Maker Lab, Design Studios, and Workshops: A Maker Lab for hands-on classes in sewing, embroidery, and patternmaking, accessible to 100+ participants each year, including scholarships for underserved groups.
Community and Cultural Events: Exhibitions, public history projects, and symposia exploring sustainability, design, and the impact of textiles on our lives, our nation, and the world.
A Third Place: A beloved place of connection, a café, retail area, and versatile event spaces for public and private gatherings that build community.
