Institute 193 is a non-profit that collaborates with artists, musicians, and writers to document the cultural landscape of the modern South. They produce exhibitions, publications, and other projects that provide artists from Kentucky and the Southeastern United States with opportunities based on the quality of their work, rather than proximity to metropolitan centers. This book, edited by founder Phillip March Jones and Chase Martin, chronicles the varied artists’ exhibitions held in its original Lexington, Kentucky, gallery space from 2009 until 2014.
It features color plates of each artist’s work and short essays about each artist’s practice and proves that art can be appreciated everywhere.
Featured artists include Louis Zoellar Bickett, Bruce Burris, Robert Morgan, Mare Vaccaro, Guy Mendes, J.T. Dockery, Lina Tharsing, Mike Goodlett, Robert Beatty, Marvin Francis, Albert Moser, Colleen Toutant, Charles Williams, Jessie Dunahoo, SO-IL, Tommy Taylor, Travis Shaffer and Jonathan Williams.
